A sketch of the house (chalet?) we stayed in during our summer holiday in the Dolomites. I was attempting a longer, more complicated subject than I might usually draw, and I had also hoped to continue to develop my use of watercolour, something I'd been working on at the start of the holidays. I was very disappointed with the result. The perspective is a little shaky, the colours I used weren't as I 'saw' them and it was such a blisteringly hot day that the paint dried up almost immediately as it went onto the page making it very difficult to create seamless blends of watercolour (this is most visible in the trees on the right). My favourite bit is the uncoloured section on the right of the page – a study of the steps leading up to the gate and the trees and valley on the other side of the road. Clearly I need to practice drawing buildings more regularly...
