alan freed

For the unitiated: Freed was an American DJ who popularised Rock ’n’ roll in the ‘50s and was credited with bringing black music to a white audience. He was brought down by the infamous ‘payola’ scandal of the early 1960s, where he was accused of accepting bribes from record labels in exchange for playing their records on his radio show. Though the practice was common, Freed was made a scapegoat and his career as a DJ was virtually ended. He died in 1965 from uremia and liver cirrhosis brought on by alcoholism. He was 43 years old.

inspirations

I've had this hanging around in one form or another for about, ooh, seven hundred years now. I tinkered with the text today (AGAIN) and coloured it in with my computer crayons and I'm still not completely satisfied with it. In fact, I was sorely tempted to put it back in the vault along with all the other half-finished doodles but no, sod it. Publish and be damned, I say. After all, what's the worst that can happen? Ostracization from the illustration community for crimes against good work? A midnight visit from the Art Police and an accidental fall down some steps?
If you want to read the text with your eyes, click on the image to get a HUGE version.
