yellow and purple pt.2

I drew the bottom version first and wasn't happy with it, so made a second attempt which was much closer to what I was trying to achieve. The composition of the second drawing is much more successful – the sharp diagonal created by the left hand running down past the head to the opposite hand works well and the distortion of the right leg is much more pronounced.

Two self-portraits from a series. Frustratingly, I haven't been able to achieve any consistency in terms of a likeness; the face/head is markedly different in each image. More to come...

eric chester

My grandfather, Eric Chester, passed away in July this year. He was in his early 90s and his health had been in decline for some time so it wasn't unexpected.

The last time I saw him – in April I think – I took lots of photographs with the intention of making a portrait of him, and here it is.

The distortions, the incorrect proportions and faulty perspective are, of course, intentional. I work from photographs most of the time and try to avoid a straight copy of the source material by deliberately exaggerating elements of the original image and also leaving in any mistakes I might make. I think I was successful here, although the drawing of the face could have been much looser.

The start of a new college year means there is no shortage of THINGS TO DO at work and invariably, blog activity is somewhat diminished. I did however, manage a couple of quick scribbles at the graduation ceremony the other day and here they are...
